Car Rental Insurance


Do Not Elect Car Rental Insurance. Standford University carries rental car insurance for all employees, visitors, and students who rent a car from any agency while on Stanford business within the continental U.S. Travelers should not elect insurance coverage from the car rental agency. No car rental insurance will be reimbursed except when renting in a foreign country or Hawaii. Copies of the Certificate of Self-Insurance can be obtained through Stanford's Office of Risk Management.

Car Rental Accident While on Stanford Business

In the event of a car rental accident while on Stanford business:

  • Request names, addresses and phone numbers of all persons involved, including any witnesses. Obtain name of legal owner of vehicle.
  • Do not admit liability or make any statement except to police officers.
  • For accidents on campus, report to Stanford Police at 650-723-9633.
  • For accidents off campus, report to local police.
  • Promptly notify Risk Management of the accident at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/Risk-Management/docs/forms/autoaccident.fft. Click at the bottom of the form to submit the information electronically to Risk Management. You may also call 650-723-0042. Refer involved party to Risk Management for insurance responses.
